7 Ways to Enjoy the British Virgin Islands

Happy Wanderlust Wednesday, Friends! The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is comprised of over 60 islands and cays. The four main islands are Tortola (where the capital, Road Town, is located), Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada. The BVI is popular for having some of the world's most beautiful beaches, inviting turquoise waters filled with vibrant marine life, and a welcoming, hospitable community.

The islands are within close proximity to one another, so you can truly go island hopping in a day! I did it when I visited and I understand why the BVI is also known as the Sailing Capital of the Caribbean. You can have breakfast on one island, head to another island for AM swim and snorkeling, then grab lunch at another island. Relax at their beach club before heading to another island for more snorkeling, cocktails for sunset, then head back to the original island for dinner.

Each island has its own character and highlights for visiting. Virgin Gorda has The Baths, Anegada is known for their signature lobsters, Jost Van Dyke is where the Painkiller cocktail was created (and this JVD has the liveliest vibe) and Tortola has Road Town, several beaches, and a lush mountainous landscape. And the best place to go celebrate a sunset is at Cooper Island. Grab a seat at the Beach Club, order from their 350+ rum bar menu (one of the largest collections in the Caribbean), and sit back while relaxation in paradise kicks in.

Here are 7 ways to enjoy your visit to the British Virgin Islands: 1. Rent a colorful Moke to explore the island by land

  1. Go island hopping! With the close proximity of the islands and cays to each other, you can visit multiple places in 1 day. Take the public ferry, rent a day charter, or reserve a water taxi.

  1. Explore The Baths and go into the secret rock pools. Climb the huge boulders and head down the rock caves. Follow the arrows to get to Devil’s Bay Beach.

  1. Visit the iconic Saba Rock island for cocktails, tropical bites, or experience a unique overnight stay in one of their 9 exclusive rooms!

  1. Glide above water and dive down via SEABOB.

  1. Grab a painkiller at Pusser's or Soggy Dollar Bar at Jost Van Dyke. The painkiller is a rum-based cocktail synonymous with the BVI!

  1. Enjoy lunch at Pirate’s Bight, Norman Island. Swim at the beach. Enjoy the freshest seafood. Later on, visit the Willy T, go upstairs, and jump off the back of the floating pirate-looking ship. Repeat!
