With global logistics shifting by the hour, here are five non-negotiables for your travel this week:
Your "3-Hour" Rule is Now the "4-Hour" Rule ⏳
Between unpaid TSA agents calling out and spring break crowds, lines are stretching into parking garages. For domestic flights, give yourself 3 hours; for international, arrive 4 hours early. Even if you have TSA Pre-Check, staffing shortages mean fewer lanes are open.
Verify Your "Global Entry" Status 🛂✅
The good news: DHS reactivated Global Entry last week on March 11. The bad news: After the 17-day suspension, the systems are glitchy. Log into your TTP (Trusted Traveler Program) dashboard before you head to the airport to ensure your membership is active and your "PASSID" is correctly linked to your booking reservation.
Generate a "Backup" Boarding Pass 📱📄
With storm-related ground stops in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta, digital systems are lagging. I suggest that you print a paper boarding pass. If your phone dies or the airline app crashes during a mass rebooking event, that paper ticket is your fastest way to get re-accommodated at the gate.
Audit Your Flight Path in your App 🛡️✈️
The conflict in Iran is causing many "tactical" airspace closures. Even if you aren't flying to the Middle East, your long-haul flight to Southeast Asia or India may have been rerouted, adding an additional 2–3 hours of flight time and potential fuel stops. Check your flight duration in your airline app to see if your "12-hour" flight is now a "15-hour" journey. ALWAYS download your airline app because it will provide updated information on your flight, baggage, gate changes, etc.
Consider Securing a "Cancel For Any Reason" (CFAR) Policy ✍️🛡️
Standard travel insurance often excludes "civil unrest" or "government shutdowns." If you are booking a trip today for the summer, consider CFAR coverage. This is something that you need to book within 14 days of your initial deposit. CFAR is the only way to ensure your investment is protected if you decide the current landscape is just a bit too high for your comfort level.
