If you’ve ever had the pleasure of a journey on the Rocky Mountaineer, you’ve seen the majestic beauty of Western Canada on one of the world’s outstanding train rides. Starting next August, that Rocky Mountaineer experience is coming to the U.S. on the newest route: Rockies to the Red Rocks.
The two-day journey between Denver and Moab (westbound and eastbound options are available) covers some of the most impressive terrain you’ll find in the American Rockies. It includes an overnight stay in Glenwood Springs, Colo., famed for its hot springs and outdoor adventures.
Like the routes through the Canadian Rockies, Rockies to the Red Rocks packs a lot into the ride. You’ll hug along the Colorado River, passing through canyons and gaining elevation on the way to Gross Reservoir dam more than 7,000 feet above sea level. You’ll climb even higher as you reach the Continental Divide and pass through the Moffat Tunnel on your way to the other side. Back along the river, Byers and Gore canyons are teeming with bighorn sheep, bears, mountain lions and deer, so you’ll want to keep your camera ready.
After a relaxing evening and morning in the charming Western Slope haven of Glenwood Springs, it’s all aboard for the journey to Moab. Along the way are some of the most astounding rock formations you could ever hope to see, including the stair-step cliffs of De Beque Canyon and the Book Cliffs, 200 miles of dramatic sandstone folds. As you cross into Utah, you’re greeted by the red rocks of Ruby Canyon, a 25-mile stretch accessible only by train or river. Passing through the La Sal Mountains, you’ll be sure to spot Mount Peale, towering at nearly 13,000 and snow-capped most of the year. The journey ends in Moab, gateway to Arches National Park, where the rock formations get even more eye-popping.
Onboard, the big picture windows and glass domes bring the visual experience of the Rockies straight to you as you enjoy regionally inspired cuisine and stories of the area told by expert hosts.
