For many of us, our pets are part of the family, and leaving them behind simply isn't an option. Traveling with a pet, especially during the busy holiday season, requires careful planning.

First, schedule a visit with your veterinarian. Make sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and has a clean bill of health. If you're flying, be sure to get a health certificate, which is often required by airlines and must be dated no more than 10 days before your departure.

Always check with your airline about their specific pet travel policies. Some airlines do not allow pets in the cabin, and there are often size and carrier restrictions. A comfortable and secure carrier is essential whether you're traveling by car or plane.

When packing for your pet, think of it as packing a separate suitcase just for them. Include their regular food, a collapsible bowl, a leash, waste bags, any medications they need, and a few of their favorite toys or a familiar blanket. This sense of familiarity can provide great comfort in new surroundings.
