How to Hack Your 2026 Calendar for Maximum Vacation Time

I took this shot while heli-hiking Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand. It was a trip that required a real plan to pull off!! Let’s be honest. We've all spent a Monday AM staring at our PTO balance while scrolling through pictures of charming European villages or white sugary sand beaches. Here's the best news you'll hear all year: you don't need more PTO to travel more this year. You just need a smarter strategy. By 'stacking' your vacation days around federal holidays, you can effectively double or even triple your time away from the office!
We already survived the longest January, so now it's time to get tactical. This post is about turning 14-15 days of PTO into 40+ days of total relaxation for the rest of 2026! Intrigued? Read on and make sure you bookmark this page!
The Spring Strategy: Presidents' Day & Memorial Day

Kick off your travel year NOW. By taking just four days off during the week of Presidents' Day (Feb 17–20), you secure a 9-day block of travel time. This is the ultimate window for a winter escape to the Caribbean or a Ski trip to Canada or the Swiss Alps.
Fast forward to May, and Memorial Day offers the same 9-day opportunity. This is prime "shoulder season" for Europe. I'm thinking Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece -- where the weather's already warming up, but the summer crowds haven't yet descended.
The Summer Squeeze: Juneteenth & July 4th
If you love summer travel, June and July are going to be your absolute best friends in 2026. Because Juneteenth and Independence Day fall near weekends, you have two separate chances to grab 9-day vacations. If you’re feeling bold, you can even bridge the gap between these holidays for an epic multi-week European tour or a how about a cross-country road trip.
The Autumn Reset: Labor Day & Beyond

As the heat fades, Labor Day provides another 9-day window (Sept 5–13). This is the perfect time for a Mediterranean cruise or a visit to Hawaii when the crowds begin to thin. For a shorter reset, the Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend in October is ideal for leaf-peeping in New England, requiring only two days of PTO for a 5-day break.
The Grand Finale: Thanksgiving & Winter Holidays
November and December are where the real magic happens. By taking three days off during Thanksgiving week, you'll enjoy nine consecutive days for family or a tropical getaway. But the ultimate "hack" is the Winter Holiday block. By strategically placing PTO between December 19 and January 3, you can enjoy a massive 16-day break while only using about 7 days of leave!!
